2 Graduates in 1 Day

Sometimes miracles happen. I believe that. A good miracle is just something that we mortal humans cant beat no matter how hard we try.

I saw a graduation miracle the other day when Stefan smiled and walked and posed with his NY State Regent diploma! It was a great sight. The young man who almost slipped away 18months ago from a terrible affliction joked his way through the ceremony, moved his tassel from one side to the other and then sported it as an earring after-wards. He was as happy as Stefan ever lets anyone see him.

I also witnessed another miracle at graduation, and it is the one that needs to be celebrated with as much pomp and circumstance as the first. I witnessed the pride and love and accomplishment of Stefan's mother reveling in the boy/graduate that she prayed so hard for.

Lois' strength has been tested, tried, beaten, examined, challenged and shot at for the last few years. She has endured more attacks from the people who made up parts of her world then you can imagine. She has been the knight in shining armor for her kids. I can attest that she is tireless in making sure that was has to happen happens. She questions the experts be they doctors, school superintendents or insurance representatives. She often takes it on the chin but rises again and keeps moving forward.

As I sat at graduation alongside Stefan's grandparents and listened to a wonderful alum speak to the new high school graduates about believing in themselves and choosing their own path and not being afraid to fail I became aware that this was a graduation for my sister as well. She knows who she is and is happy with herself. She walks a unique path. She is not afraid of failure and will fight for what is right. Says what needs to be said even if it is not easy. She emanates love and is deserving of it. She didn't get a diploma from the state of NY but she got a standing ovation in spirit from us for survival. She did all this sans her beloved apron but with good humor!

My prayer for her is that the next 10 years is nothing but smooth sailing now that she is past the rapids. Semper fidelis!
