December 26th, 2011

Once again it has come,
and now it is done.
The one day of the year,
where we attempt the home-run!

The boxes and paper,
the ribbons and bows.
The wine and the cookies,
the hoping for snow.

Our traditional presents,
socks, underwear and toys.
Given each year,
to men now, not boys.

The new gifts, the odd ones,
Soap and hair-dryers,
Pet rocks, water balloons,
Hot sauce, USB wires.

Amid all the hustle,
the stress and the rush.
We cherish our moment,
and try not to gush.

My gift, however,
was perfect and dear.
Our family together,
a few hours of cheer.

I look at the fir,
decked out, lit up, fine.
Sparkling and lovely,
at night, quite divine.

Under the branches,
curled up and at rest,
Our cat purring softly,
content and unstressed.

Yes, this is simple,
I know, not the best.
But my Christmas was special,
I know I am blessed.
