Melissa from the Bronx and Enrique

Today on the Today Show a cool thing happened. Cool and nice. Enrique Iglesias was singing on the Plaza in his very suave style. His Latin good looks and beautiful voice oozing into the universe. Hundreds of fans screaming and singing along to Hero. Nice scene on a summer morning, yet the best was coming. As sometimes happens at concerts a girl is pulled up on stage to look into his eyes and be serenaded. Melissa from the Bronx was the lucky girl today. Enrique looked deep into her eyes, he danced with her and stroked her face and kissed her on the forehead as the crowd sang every word. He made her the center of his world for a few moments. It was adorable. At the end of the song he put her arms around his waist and she looked into his eyes and he planted one right on her lips! The crowd burst into more applause. Perfect moment. Melissa from the Bronx was beaming and I was smiling to. I love cheesy moments like this.

I loved the song when it came out years ago and now I love it more. Why? Because Melissa from the Bronx is not the typical girl to get pulled up onstage. We usually see the pretty blonde slim teenager in the cute outfit. Melissa from the Bronx is a rather short, bespectacled, curvy girl with naturally curly hair surrounding her round pretty face. Her outfit consisted of denim Capri pants and a long tee shirt. Melissa is one of us. Us being normal and not a size 2.

What Melissa from the Bronx has is confidence, style and an inner light. She was not the least bit intimidated by the size of the crowd, the TV cameras, the stage and the band or the "superstar" singing to her. Melissa was in the moment and living it!! I know she was mesmerized by the handsome man and hopefully the realization that this was a once in a lifetime moment. You could tell by the look on her face that she would be floating home. Most of my women friends would be thrilled to invite Melissa from the Bronx to join us in anything, not because she was singled out by a pop star but because she handled it like a star herself!!

Even though it may have been a very wise move on Enrique's part to choose the one no one would have expected him to I hope the men I know (young and not so young) take the time to see more than the size and shape of a woman. There are lots of incredible people out there who would love to sing with you and they may just be one of us: normal and wonderful(and far from ordinary), like Melissa from the Bronx!

If you get a chance take a look at the video of the performance and you will see what I mean. A great cheesy live TV moment.
