Today my sister and I were bantering online through facebook and it was so much fun!! We started by talking about the "game" of going to Urban dictionary and finding and posting the definition of your name there (since kids sometimes read my fb, I chose not to include the definition for Diane which had to do with quickly disrobing!). Shane posted his and of course prompted us to talk about how much his grandmother idolized him when he was born so Lois assumed that she most likely suggested his name to me and I decided to use it, which is not true (his grandmother called him Carmine, by the way, like from Laverne and Shirley!!).
The next thing Lois did was answer a question about a fictitious name for me and she came up with "Twilight Tie Di". OK, so I still like tie dye. I think it is an amazing American style. I think it is expressive and pretty and never goes out of style--hence, classic. I know it is not for everyone, I know it is my blast from the past, but, I also know that it sells in this college town like sticky buns from the Diner and Peachy Paterno ice cream!! I see it on little kids, teenagers and people who are even older than me.
So here are things I consider classic and I probably could never live without for too long: my beautiful Waterford crystal stemware that I got as a bride (wish I had more since I have never added to the collection). A stereo and my favorite tunes to play on it, especially James Taylor's Sweet Baby James; a perfect album. Flannel pajamas which I use as lounge wear like others use sweatpants and t shirts. Flip flops, in all colors and cheap rubber ones, too. The crocheted angel that my grandmother made for all of us before she died and which adorns our Christmas tree every year. Snowmen and women who visit me every year in all sizes and shapes and styles. Olives! An amethyst and pearl ring that Mike gave me before we were engaged because it was such a surprise and is still so pretty even though one of the pearls is missing. Our family cookbook and the letters my Uncle Joe sends us every year. A vacation at Gathering Dreams and the memories from there. Broadway shows! and soundtracks. The cross Adam brought me from Ireland and the memory of the cannolis Shane and the kids made for me one year for my birthday. Laughing with my family and eating lasagna. Talking with my father about anything. HUGS. Sesame Street songs and Muppets. Mel Brooks movies. Reading a good book while wrapped in a blanket. etc, etc, etc.
Classics all, in my humble opinion; like tie dye and facebook conversations!
I can agree with most of what you are saying are classics. The Crocheted Angel that adorns my tree also, My raggedy Anne and Andy that our grandmother made with her signature on the hinnie of Raggedy Anne. Music and family memories in print. All are classic and timeless. Except Tie Die, I still to this day can not wrap myself around it! However is has become a classic joke between the writer and myself,so I guess in a way it is classic to me. Its classic Diane!
